The Bernedoodle Mom Shirt, and Other Ways to Announce That a Small Bear Lives at Your House
Bernedoodle owners hear one question more than any other: "Is that a bear?" It is a fair question. A standard Bernedoodle can outweigh a checked suitcase, wears a coat like a shag rug, and sits on people's feet as a sign of affection. A Bernedoodle mom gets the hair on every outfit, the bruise on the shin from the full-body lean, and a dog with strong opinions about how early everyone should be up.
What a bernedoodle mom shirt has to get right
The markings. A Bernese Mountain Dog wears a famous tricolor pattern: a black body, a white blaze down the face, a white chest, and rust on the cheeks, the legs and two little dots above the eyes. Bernedoodles keep some of that pattern and scramble the rest. You will see tricolors, black and whites, phantoms with tan points, sables, and nearly every combination in between. A bernedoodle mom shirt with a generic fluffy dog on it is a nice shirt. One that shows the blaze and the eyebrows is her dog.
The cleanest way to show those markings is line art, which is why the Bernedoodle Mom shirt sets a detailed face, white blaze and all, right inside the word Mom, in white on a dark shirt.
Notice that it works in a single color. The blaze and the dark patches around the eyes do all the identifying, so even without the rust, a Bernedoodle owner reads it as their dog instantly. One color also flatters every pattern, so a phantom or a black and white Bernedoodle looks just as right in it as a tricolor.
Where the Bernedoodle came from
The Bernese Mountain Dog is an old Swiss farm dog, bred to guard, to herd, and to pull carts of milk and cheese to the dairy. The Poodle brought the low-shedding coat and the brains. The first deliberate Bernedoodle litters, and the name itself, are usually credited to a Canadian breeder, Sherry Rupke, in 2003.
The personality usually leans Bernese: gentle, devoted, a little goofy, and fully convinced it is a lap dog at any size. The coat can keep changing as the puppy grows, too. Some tricolors fade or pick up silver from the Poodle side, so the grown dog may not quite match its puppy photos.
Today they come in sizes: a standard, often 70 to 90 pounds, plus mini and tiny versions bred with smaller Poodles. If the generation labels on a breeder's website read like algebra, our Doodle Decoder sorts out what F1 and F1b actually mean.
For the mama who wants it sweeter
If Mom is too plain a word, the Bernedoodle Mama tee says it in pink varsity letters, with a heart and a bone above the name and a tricolor puppy sitting proudly beside it, all inside a soft wreath of leaves and a bow.
This is the softer side of Bernedoodle life, the one that forgets the shin bruises for a moment. Look at the puppy: the black coat, the white blaze, the rust on the cheeks and paws. That is the full tricolor in miniature, which is why owners of tricolor dogs claim it on sight.
A mama shirt also makes a good first-week gift. A new Bernedoodle puppy is roughly the size of a loaf of bread for about five minutes, and the person doing the night shifts has earned the title.
For the small bear at your house
The Bernedoodle collection gathers every design we make for them, from the mom and dad shirts to the ones that simply let the dog be the joke. Pick the one that looks like the bear currently leaning on your legs.
